Footnotes

(1) The majority of HD DVDs are encoded at 24 frames per second. The HD-A1, XA1, and HD-A2 cannot (and most likely never be able to) support 24fps or 1080p due to a video DAC limitation. Though keep in mind any quality 1080p display will perform correct 3:2 pulldown and reconstruct the original 1080p video on the HD DVD. Also it's important to note the HD-A20 currently has a bug where it doesn't use 3:2 pulldown in the 1080p conversion, resulting in subtle video artifacting when the player is set to 1080p output. The HD-XA2 performs this 1080p conversion correctly and better than many current 1080p displays. Saying all this, HD DVDs aren't 1080p natively, the video is interlaced (1080i) with progressive "flags" encoded on the disc telling the deinterlacer to "create" 1080p. Blu-ray and DVD are the same way.
(2) Transcoded into 24-bit/96kHz Linear PCM.
(3) Downconverted to full bitrate (1.5 MBps) standard DTS.
**(2)(3) Only via Coaxial, Optical, multi-channel analog outputs, and HDMI outputs. If the player supports Audio Bitstream Bypass, all audio codecs can be sent via HDMI to a compatible A/V receiver or processor for decoding.
**(Special Audio Note) The HD-A1, HD-XA1, HD-AO, and RD-A1 transcode Dolby Plus and Dolby TrueHD tracks to full bitrate (1.5 MBps) standard DTS via Coaxial and Optical outputs. All other models downconvert Dolby Plus and Dolby TrueHD tracks to full bitrate (640kbps) standard Dolby Digital via Coaxial and Optical outputs.
(4) Due to AACS restrictions, DVD is limited to 480p and HD DVD is limited to 1080i max. If a given HD DVD has Image Constraint Token (ICT) enabled, resolution will be limited to 540p, though no HD DVD has ICT enabled to this date.
(5) Via Optical or Coaxial, due to bandwidth limitations, all HD DVD audio is transcoded to full bitrate (1.5 MBps) standard DTS. Via HDMI or 5.1 Analog Out, full range HD DVD audio is available.
(6) Second Gen models have redesigned chipset architecture from the First Gen which made full audio processing possible with one SHARC DSP instead of four. Though it has been long rumored with the First Gen's 4 SHARC DSP horsepower, DTS-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding may be possible if provided in the future.
(7) The Toshiba XA1 also features a motorized front panel door and double walled construction.
(8) All Japanese player models (XA1, XFA2, XA2) and DVR models (above) have a D-tanshi video connection that supports various resolutions for Japanese HDTVs.
(9) This feature is allows devices connected via HDMI to control each other from one remote.
(10) This feature will allow the player to send the raw undecoded audio bitstream of the new HD audio formats (Dolby Plus/TrueHD & DTS-HD/Master Audio) to an external A/V receiver or processor for decoding via its HDMI connection. The prior method was to losslessly transcode the bitstream to LPCM within the player for output.
(11) The HD-A2, A20, XA2 and the Onkyo 805 feature a single Wolfson WM8740 24-bit/192kHz stereo DAC for its 2-channel analog out connections. The HD-A1, XA1, and XA2 share the same TI Burr-Brown DACs on their 5.1 analog outs, but the A1 and XA1 have these BB DACs on all channels. This is why both first generation models are considered superior CD players than all three of the second generation models.
(12) The RD-RX7 is slated to become Toshiba's flagship recorder. It will have the ability to burn up to 2 hours of High Definition material on a regular DVD-R DL disc. A feature entitled "HD-Rec".
(13) The HD-A1 and HD-XA1 upsample all internally decoded audio to 24-bit/96KHz via their HDMI, 5.1 analog, and 2.0 analog outs.
(14) The Onkyo DV-HD805 and Integra DHS-8.8 include Direct Digital Audio Mode that shuts off the Analog and Coaxial/Optical connections when transmitting audio via HDMI.
