Prison (1988) - 1988 NEC Avenue Japan LaserDisc

.
Very badass LaserDisc came in yesterday, Renny Harlin's contribution to the late '80s/early '90s mini-wave of lock up-themed horror, Prison, on the NEC Avenue label from Japan. There's nothing special about the presentation outside of the cover being so damn cool. The full frame picture is noticeably more colorful and sharper than the dark and greenish-tinted Japanese VHS. MGM owns the domestic rights to this film, so there's probably going be a Limited Edition DVD-R release eventually...

Nice! Fond - if extremely vague - memories of getting my ma and step-dad to rent this for me back in the day. I remember very little except they tried to watch it with me and kept talking shit about how crappy they thought it was and I was all like "C'MON, you guys! I'm trying to WATCH this!"

Hahaha, yeah, it's fun and has good rewatchability, the climax kinda goes a bit too crazy with the supernatural aspect though.

I love that blue side shield. Looks great with that white Japanese logo.

Nice find! I really dig this film quite a bit. With someone else behind the camera, it could easily have been a forgettable experience. But I felt Harlin added just enough visual flair to it that made it stand out from the crowd. The effects were pretty decent as well. Too bad this isn't widescreen though. I hope you're right about an eventual DVD release. That'd be awesome.

...do you dare tread upon the staircase?
