It looks like the Suspiria Recording of Dawn of the Dead is Coming...

.

Stingray is set to debut a new five-disc DVD box set of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead on April 22, 2010 in Japan dubbed the "Zombi - New Century Complete DVD-BOX". The set appears to be only available through Stingray; so presumably it'll be a bitch to import, and clocks in at a wallet-exploding $232 (21,000円). The most interesting aspect of this set is that it appears Stingray have re-integrated the soundtrack of the super rare early-'90s, "aired-once" TV Tokyo broadcast in which the music from Dario Argento's Suspiria mysteriously replaced the original score. These specs are tentative (and so are any English-friendly audio/subtitle options), I've been poking around all over the place for a good translation, and this is the best I could come with:
  • 16x9 1.85:1 widescreen transfers w/ 5.1 audio
  • U.S. Theatrical Version (127 minutes)
  • Cannes Festival "Director's Cut" (139 minutes, HD master, "elaborate" restoration)
  • European/Japanese Argento Cut (119 minutes, created from the world's first HD master)
  • TV Tokyo's "Thursday Movie Theater" Missing Dub on the Argento Cut w/ new recording
  • (I believe the "new recording" part refers to filling out the restored portions once heavily censored in Japan)
  • New recording of the (Japanese?) dub for the 139 Minute "Director's Cut"
  • Audio Commentary (no idea who) on the Argento Cut
  • "Demonia" documentary about Dario Argento with rare footage
  • American television (Starz) "Zombimania" documentary with new Romero interviews (IMDb listing / Commercial at YouTube)
  • 64-page "ultra luxurious" booklet

I never even heard of DotD being cut with the Suspiria score. That's crazy! I'm not paying over $200 for what basically sounds like the AB Ultimate box set, but I would love to get a copy of the film with the Suspiria score.

That box set will never exist in my dojo. Good lord. But interesting find, man. I don't keep up on strange releases and the like, so I often find your posts pretty damn interesting.

That IS bizarre. This one's definitely for completists only. On a side note, I saw both Dawn and Suspiria on a double bill in a local theatre a couple of weeks ago. My two fave Goblin scores pounding through a good sound system.
