Dark Sky, how could you?!?

Judging by the direct captures on DVDBeaver's review, Dark Sky Films has digitally noise reduced their upcoming Blu-ray of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. The film is a very low budget production shot on 16mm, but it doesn't deserve this, especially after the studio's great high def presentation of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Of course, as usual Mr. Tooze has no idea what he's looking at from his comments.

The grain structure on those captures looks clumpy. It's not a back breaking amount of digital tinkering, but it's enough to make it clearly visible the grain has been smoothed. Hell, when you resize the Blu-ray capture to the resolution of Dark Sky's DVD (640x480), they look identical, but the DVD doesn't appear to have any noise reduction. Also I have no idea why the Blu-ray's color is so drawn compared to the DVD; so much for the reviewer's comment of the colors being "richer and far more pronounced than on the previous DVD releases." Their DVD's transfer isn't progressive, so who knows what Dark Sky utilized for the creation of this 1080p presentation. I'm sticking with the DVD.

In other quickie Blu-ray news, MGM has crushed Manhunter out of the park, safe to chuck your DVDs out the window and grab this in the three BD set with Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.
